Dimensions are outside measurements converted from the Vivarium Electronics instruction manual. Allow at least 6 inches of clearance on all sides for airflow.

Common questions

How accurate is the temperature?

The thermostat is proportional and lets you set your target to a tenth of a degree, with a range of 41 to 104°F. A basic on/off thermostat cuts power completely, overshoots, then drops below target, cycling several degrees all day. A proportional controller feeds power continuously and eases into the set point instead, which is what keeps a clutch stable across a two month incubation. A built-in alarm also sounds and cuts the heating element if the cabinet ever drifts more than 9°F from your setting.

What does UVC sterilization actually do?

Eggs sit in a warm, humid, sealed box for two months, which is close to ideal conditions for mold and bacteria. The built-in UVC lamp treats the air as it circulates, suppressing airborne spores before they settle on your containers. It runs every 12 hours for 20 minutes by default, and both the interval and the run time are adjustable. The lamp is user replaceable and sits behind the back wall for safety.

Do I still need a separate thermostat?

No. The controller is built into the unit. Many experienced breeders still hang an independent probe thermometer inside as a redundant check, which is sound practice on any incubator regardless of brand.

Can I incubate two species at once?

Each unit is a single chamber running one set point. Species that need meaningfully different temperatures should go in separate units or be staggered across the season. Species within a degree or two of each other share a chamber fine.

Which size should I buy if I am between two?

Size up. Incubators are a multi-season purchase and clutch counts tend to grow. The step from the VE 240L to the VE 450L nearly doubles your capacity, which is far cheaper than buying a second unit next spring.

How does an incubator this size ship?

Free shipping to the continental USA. Because of their size, incubators travel by motor freight and are delivered to your curb. There is no inside delivery, so arrange help moving the unit before it arrives. Inspect the shipment immediately. If the outer carton or the incubator shows any visible damage, either refuse the delivery or have the driver note the damage clearly on the bill of lading before you sign. Signing a clean bill of lading can limit what you are able to claim afterward.

Does the incubator cool?

No. That is a deliberate design choice: removing the cooling function is what allows the use of a proportional thermostat, and that is where the very tight temperature control comes from. These units heat only, so the cabinet cannot go below your room temperature. For the thermostat to hold a steady set point, your room should sit at least 10°F below your target incubation temperature. A hot room in July is the most common reason an incubator overshoots. A dedicated reptile room is often not the best location for this reason.

What is the warranty?

Every VE incubator carries a limited one year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship from the original date of purchase. Full terms and the claim process are covered in the instruction manual included with your unit.

What happens during a power outage?

The incubator has power-off memory. If power fails or the unit is unplugged, it holds every setting and restores them automatically when power returns, so there is nothing to reprogram. It cannot produce heat without power, though. The insulated cabinet slows the temperature drop, but for a long outage in the middle of an incubation you will want a generator or battery backup. Separately, a built-in alarm sounds and cuts power to the heating element if the cabinet drifts more than 9°F from your set point, so a runaway thermostat cannot cook a clutch unnoticed.

Can I return an incubator?

We cannot accept returns on incubators because of the freight involved, so please confirm the size before ordering. If you are between two sizes or unsure, contact us first and we will help you pick.
