Heat tape has no controller of its own. Running it unregulated is the fastest way to lose animals. The VE-200 uses pulse control, which suits heat tape better than simple on and off switching, and one unit runs an entire rack. If you would rather choose your own controller, every rack is also sold without one.

Yes, and this is the main reason to buy a VE-6. Each level is 14.76 inches wide and every tub is the same depth and height, so a level takes three 8 qt tubs, two 11 qt tubs, or one 23 qt tub. Run hatchlings on the top levels and adults below, then change the mix as animals grow. You are buying one rack, not four.

Heat tape. It sits under each level and provides belly heat, which is what snakes use to thermoregulate and digest. It is not a radiant heat panel and it is not a heat cable.

You do not need a second thermostat. The VE-300X2 runs two independent zones from one unit, with separate night drop and alarms per zone. If a second rack is on the horizon, it may be worth buying racks without thermostats and pairing them with a single VE-300X2 instead.

A VE-6 is 23 inches deep by 16.5 inches wide and stands 30 inches tall. A VE-70 is 34.5 by 20 inches and 30.75 inches tall. Both stack, so two VE-6 racks reach normal shelf height while holding up to 36 animals in about a foot and a half of wall width.
