Aldabra Tortoises, known scientifically as Aldabrachelys gigantea, are among the largest tortoises in the world, native to the Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles. These ancient reptiles are remarkable for their impressive longevity, with many living over a century, and some individuals are even reported to have lived for more than 200 years. Characterized by their domed, dark gray to black shells and sturdy, elephantine legs, Aldabra Tortoises have evolved to thrive in a variety of environments, from mangrove swamps to coastal dunes. Their size can be awe-inspiring, with adults often weighing over 550 pounds and measuring up to four feet in length. Their massive body helps regulate their internal temperature and enables them to go for weeks without food or water, an adaptation vital for survival in their sometimes harsh natural habitat.

Interestingly, these tortoises are known to have a mutualistic relationship with some bird species, such as the Aldabra Drongo, which feed on parasites found on the tortoises’ skin and in their wounds. In terms of reproduction, female Aldabra Tortoises lay between 9 to 25 eggs in a dry, sunny location, which they then leave to incubate naturally in the warmth of the sun. The young are precocial and fend for themselves immediately after hatching, facing a world full of challenges with little parental intervention.
